The Appeal of the Real

Are you a nonfiction reader? What draws you to nonfiction? How do you find your next nonfiction book? The Real Story – A Guide to Nonfiction Reading Interests, by Sarah Statz Cords is an excellent resource for those of us to prefer our stories rooted in reality.

In this exhaustive book, Cords breaks down nonfiction into a variety of genres, many of them having close parallels to fiction. There are true stories of adventure, which usually read like fiction and feature a rapid pace. Travel nonfiction may appeal to the armchair voyager who wants to learn about exotic cultures from the comfort of his living room. Science and math genres are well suited to readers who appreciate order and logical systems, with a curiosity about how and why things work. History books often make excellent crossovers for fiction lovers, as they feature story and characters and provide fascinating detail relating to geography, customers, culture and beliefs.

What nonfiction titles have you read lately that have captivated you?

Overbooked!

Great news for anybody who has a hard time keeping up all the great new fiction and non-fiction books out there. There's a fabulous website called Overbooked (http://www.overbooked.org/) that will help you keep up to date and on top of the latest publishing trend.

Overbooked has been providing timely information about fiction (all genres) and readable nonfiction since 1994, and I find their "Hotlists: New and Notable Books" section particularly useful. Also, if you want to know which books have been recieving critical acclaim, check out their Starred Review List.
