Easy E-cycling

How many of us have old electronics, computer equipment and various items with plug-ins accumulating in a closet, basement or garage? I am certainly guilty of it.

I know that electronics waste is the fastest growing type of waste in North America. It also contains hazardous material such as chemicals or heavy metals like lead or mercury – an average computer contains as much as four pounds of lead and a circuit board has over 16 hazardous heavy metals. This is not something you want going into a landfill!

What you may not know is that old electronics are also a valuable resource – 300 per cent richer in precious metal than virgin ore. Material such as aluminum, glass, plastics, and other metals can be recycled and recycling produces only a fraction of the pollution caused by mining.  The good news is that there are several permanent electronics recycling depots in Calgary. There is no excuse for unloading outdated equipment in an apartment or condo dumpster (I hope some of my neighbours are reading this!) Items accepted free of charge are listed below, but be aware that some drop-off sites have a maximum of 5 items per visit.

Personal Computers:

  • Central processing units (CPU)
  • Laptops
  • Servers
  • Components

Computer Peripherals:

  • Keyboards
  • Mice
  • Cables
  • Computer speakers

Computer Monitors

Televisions

Desktop Printers

Printer Combination Units

Why not pair your e-cycling with a trip to the Calgary Farmer's Market? Recycle-Logic Inc. out of Red Deer operates a full-service drop-off site at the Currie Barracks, and will even unload your vehicle for you!

If these permanent sites don't work for you, consider bringing your old TV and computer to ERA's electronics round-up, Tuesday, March 03, 2009 to Friday, March 06, 2009 at 9am - 5pm at the SAIT campus:

The Electronic Recycling Association (www.era.ca) is hosting an Electronics Round Up at SAIT Campus (1301 16th Ave NW Calgary). The event is open to all students, staff and the general public.
Please bring all of your old computer and electronic equipment for donation. We will collect the equipment, refurbish it and then donate it to various local charities and non-profit groups.
