Get Down with TechKnow Tuesdays

Come down to the Central Library Tuesdays at lunchtime to get in the (Tech)Know!

So long summer. Hello fall!

I'm not one of those ever cheery people who, as the leaves die and fall, say that autumn is their favourite season of the year. No, for me nothing replaces summer's long nights, warm days, lazy vacations and strong fruity drinks in tall sweating glasses.

Then again, it hasn't been much of a summer anyway, so out with the old, in with the new!

One good thing about fall is that our new fall program guide, filled with interesting, fun and engaging programs is now out.

In September we celebrate Arts Month with special events on theatre, music and visual arts. Don't miss the Antiques Appraisal Day with Brian Lehman on Saturday September 18. Also check out Food is Life, September 25 and 26. It's an entire weekend devoted to food and foodies,  gardening and gardeners. Yum.

October is Canadian Library Month and we're celebrating with special events throughout the month including a Small Business Week and Careers Lecture Series October 18 to 20, a Self Employment and Mentorship Tradeshow October 21st and our annual Travel the World series on October 23 and 24.

November is entirely devoted to One Book One Calgary, a city-wide reading of Mavericks: The Incorrigible History of Alberta by Aritha Van Herk. It all starts with a kick off event on November 4th.

Check out our new program guide for adults and for kids online or at a library location near you. You can sign up starting Monday August 23rd.

Things Fall Apart

Things Fall Apart by Chinua Achebe has garnered worldwide acclaim since its publication in 1958 and is considered to be the archetypal English-language modern African novel, appearing in Time Magazine's Best English-language Novels from 1923 to 2005.

The book illustrates the effect of Christian missionaries and colonialism on a fictional Nigerian town called Umuofia during the late nineteenth century through the story of Okonkwo, a town leader.

The Central Library and Afrikadey are pleased to present a theatrical reading of Things Fall Apart on Thursday August 12th at 7:00 p.m. in the John Dutton Theatre.  The book was adapted for the stage by local playwright, novelist, filmmaker, poet, and screenwriter Cheryl Foggo and it will be the last reading before the piece moves into its next phase of development. Join us for a thrilling evening, bringing this celebrated novel to life.

No registration is required for this free event. See you there!

Heritage Day in Calgary

It's about time for a long weekend! All Calgary Public Library locations will be closed on Monday August 2 for Heritage Day. But don't worry, there's plenty to do in Calgary this weekend.

Heritage Park is serving a free pancake breakfast to the first 500 people who enter the park that day between 9:30 and 10:00 a.m. During the day there will be street theatre, ice cream making and the Strathcona Mounted Troop performing their Musical Ride.

Fort Calgary's free schedule of events includes a children's theatre performance by Wagonstage, a birthday celebration (free cake) for the 100 year old Fort Calgary windmill, a talk on art history in Alberta and more.

The Calgary Fringe Festival also starts this weekend, and is your chance to take in a variety of different theatre performances all based at venues in Inglewood.

And speaking of Inglewood, the Inglewood Sunfest is this Saturday with performances, street vendors and food all along 9th Avenue.

Enjoy your holiday and we'll see you on Tuesday!

Stampeding, Folky Librarians

Stampede has only been over for a week, but it seems like months to me.  Maybe that's due to the fact that I just spent four days enjoying the Calgary Folk Fest last weekend. The Calgary Public Library was there too.

Check out our pictures from Stampede Parade Day on Facebook (and 'Like" us at the same time to keep in touch).  Our float was the ultimate reading rodeo, complete with a cowboy having a wild ride on a book, characters from some of your favourite books, mini-donkeys and a fantastic vintage car.

At the Calgary Folk Music Festival, CPL set up a Living Library. Festival goers could sign out a 'human book' - an actual person, to sit with and chat about their 'topic' or life experience. Some of the participants (or books) spoke about their experience battling an eating disorder, immigrating from another country, or living with a disability.   It's a great way to break down barriers between people, and develop compassion and understanding of different life experiences, lifestyles and cultures. Watch for the library in your community!
