Computer Technology Coaching

If you’re reading this blog, then chances are you’re already fairly proficient with the computer.  But, you may know someone who needs assistance with sending e-mail, formatting a resume, or using MS Office Suite.

The Central Library is pleased to announce a new weekly drop-in program called Computer Technology Coaching.

Each Thursday night, on the 3rd floor of the Central Library, a volunteer will be available to provide one-on-one assistance.  No registration is required.

Join us from 6 – 7:45 and start formatting, attaching, e-mailing, uploading, and more!

Career Cruising

If you’re looking for work, you know that it can be a daunting process.  Make things easier on yourself by learning about the resources at your disposal.  One of them is an online database called Career Cruising, and it’s available on CPL’s e-library.


Career Cruising has a wealth of information for people at every stage of the job hunt.  Take a quiz to determine which interests and personality traits might lead you to various careers.  Find out what education is required for each career, and which Canadian schools will grant you the degree/diploma/certificate or ticket you need.  Get local and current salary information, so you’re ready to negotiate.  Career Cruising even allows you to look through local job ads!


This easy-to-use, comprehensive database is free to Calgary Public Library cardholders.  Library staff use this database to answer your questions, and we also promote it in our Career Tours programs.  It’s a great resource for high school students, those for whom English is a second language (ESL), and job hunters of every level.

2010 Executive Job Market Intelligence Report

The online 2010 Executive Job Market Intelligence Report provides unique insights into to how companies find talent, and examines the best practices of successful job seekers . It also looks at trends and best practices in executive level career development and explores hiring and retention issues. This report is based upon surveys of search firms and corporate recruiters who use ExecuNet’s services. Usually only available to members, ExecuNet granted the Calgary Public Library permission to share this with its members.

New Canadian Career Content: Learning Express Database

Learning Express is one of the many specialized career databases that you have access to from the Library's website. It features practice tests, exercises and skill-building courses, and may be used anywhere you have a Library card and a computer. Last month, Canadian content was introduced, including:

·         Full length, instantly scored practice tests for the Canadian Forces Aptitude Test (CFAT) and Royal Canadian Mounted Police Aptitude Test (RPAT)

·         Canadian GED Practice Exams

·         Canadian Citizenship Exam Preparation

Anatomy of a Career Tour

The Business, Science & Social Sciences department of the Calgary Public Library is pleased to offer Career Tours to groups and individuals.  We’ve been hosting them for years, and consistently receive positive feedback about how valuable this program is.  What is a Career Tour, and why should you participate?

A Career Tour is a 75 – 90 minute presentation about all of the resources and services that the Calgary Public Library provides to those who are seeking employment, or refining their workplace skills.

In a tour, participants will learn about print sources (books, newspapers, magazines, etc), electronic databases, recommended websites, online directories, CPL's e-library and much more!  Experienced facilitators will highlight our favourite resources, and gladly answer your questions.  We will tailor the presentation to suit the backgrounds and interests of the participants.  Teens, small business owners, newcomers and ESL students, engineers with foreign credentials; no matter what the group profile, we’ll customize a tour! 

Go beyond Google, to make your job search thorough, efficient and effective.
